Victoria Made: Modern, contemporary wedding cakes from Sheffield

Specialising in wedding cakes with a very modern feel, victoria works from a home studio based in Sheffield covering Yorkshire, North West and Midlands.

At ideal Bride Magazine we would like to introduce cake maker Victoria Made to our readers. We recently had the pleasure of interviewing Victoria herself, here is what she had she say:

What does Victoria made offer their customers?

"I offer fruit and sponge cakes, typical sponge flavours are Vanilla, Lemon, orange, coffee, amaretto, coconut, almond. I tend to stick to 'natural' flavours rather than anything too gimmicky. I also do a carrot cake with either (or all) pecan, apricot, sultanas and a to die for gooey dark chocolate mud cake. I do tiered cakes, cupcakes and favours of either cookies or can do alternative ones such as meringue hearts etc. I am happy to provide any sort of dessert also. The cupcake flavours, number in the thousands but most popular are white or dark chocolate mud, caramel mud (good as they last a good few days), rose, framboise, berry, lemon, orange and carrot and apricot."

What made you decide to begin Victoria made?

"An acquaintance at the time was looking at the cupcake business, I checked out doing the larger cakes as a possibility, had a go and the rest is history! I'd been a chef before so the baking wasn't too much of a new thing for me although the decorating side of things was a whole new world. The chance to make a living doing something so creative is amazing, as is the chance to make someone's day."

How long have you been trading? How many people form Victoria made?

"I am the sole designer/baker (marketer/washer upper etc....), so I'm a very tiny outfit! I feel that I can spend more time and care on all of my cakes by staying small and I love the process of designing then finishing each cake personally. I can still manage a fair few cakes, up to around 300 (or a bit more) cupcakes for a wedding/event at a time. I started about 3 years ago just doing bits and bobs on top of my full time job just to learn the trade as it were, I'm self taught so it's been a steep learning curve! I left my full time job in May to concentrate on the cakes; I found it frustrating to never have the proper time to put into the design side of things. Trying to fit a large cake into a working week/life and finish it as I'd like was quite difficult."

Which Geographical areas do you cover?

"I will try and deliver to most places if possible, dependant on order. I am based in Sheffield; Yorkshire and surrounding areas for definite."

What is the price range for your products?

"Each cake is bespoke, therefore prices vary. Please contact Victoria Made for a quotation."

What was your occupation before Victoria made?

"I started out as a chef, then catering and hospitality manager. In 2001 I went a bit leftfield and qualified as a fitness instructor and then went on to become a gym/recreation manger at Sheffield Hallam University. Eat cake need the gym, makes sense...?!"

What materials / decorations / toppers do you use in your creations?

"I endeavour to use only the best ingredients in the cakes and stick to organic natural flavours. I tend to do most decorations in sugar though I would like to do some more chocolate work. I'm not a cake topper person I'm afraid! Fresh flowers can't be beaten sometimes."

What sets you apart from other cake suppliers?

"I hope that my designs set me apart, I'm not a big 'girly' girl and I think my designs reflect a more modern, simple contemporary style. I tend to steer clear of the massive 'American style' cakes and lean towards smaller designed set pieces."

What kind of service can your customers expect?

"Very personal! It is just me so from the consultation and design to cracking the eggs and delivery everything is done by me and to what I hope are my own very high standards. I'm quite relaxed and I hope that comes through also. I'm happy for the bride to change their mind as often as is possible, it's a lot to decide on sometimes - I will always try to go out of my way."

Are you attending any upcoming wedding fairs/shows/exhibitions?

"I'm attending an exhibition at the Botanical Gardens in Sheffield in July which is where I got married, and there is some really good local talent on show. I've just been approached to attend a luxury wedding supplier exhibition at the Saatchi Galleries in London so can't wait to hopefully firm up the details on that. Very minimal, love it! There is a lovely new shop opening in Sheffield, White Room Bridal where I am helping out for the opening and hopefully beyond - they will be stocking some beautiful high end dresses from designers like Jenny Packham so that will be great."

Why is the wedding cake important?

"The cake can bring the theme of your day together and make a beautiful and sometimes dramatic centrepiece to the reception. Statement pieces such as the Choccywoccydoodah cakes are fast becoming focal points of the wedding. Oh, and its cake!"

What should brides be considering when choosing a cake supplier?

"The website will generally give you a feel for the designers work; look for someone who will inspire your ideas. A meeting is always a must so nothing gets lost in translation, you need to have a good relationship with the designer, and just someone who will encourage you to think outside the box a little bit - and provide samples! I always do these for free; it's a big investment so I think that's only reasonable."

What should brides consider when ordering their cake?

"Things to consider are style of cake (tiered or cupcakes/other?), where/how the cake will be displayed, how many portions you will need - wedding portions are very small, if it's you cutting it you may be a bit more heavy handed! Delivery, stand hire can all be extras on the price so budget should include these. Do you match to dress/theme or venue? Any allergies and of course taste."
