2012 Wedding Trend
Although seen as a South American tradition, the groom's cake can be traced back to the Victorian era in England. It was Victorian tradition that in addition to the main wedding cake they would also have a groom's cake and a smaller bride's cake. At the end of the wedding the two cakes would be sliced and served to the bridesmaids and groomsmen.
The groom's cake tradition has remained popular in South America with many brides' finding the groom's cake appealing as it is a way of giving the groom recognition on a day where the attention is mainly on the bride.
In 2012 we will see a rise in the appearance of groom's cakes at weddings in the UK. Prince William gave a nod to this tradition at his wedding earlier this year to Kate Middleton. The Prince apparently requested a groom's cake made of chocolate and rich tea biscuits!
The groom's cake is conventionally smaller and darker than the main wedding cake; often made with dark chocolate, fruit and liqueur. The groom's cake should reflect the groom's personality, often resembling their occupation or a hobby.
The groom's cake is not served at the wedding reception, individual slices are boxed up and given to the unmarried women amongst the guests. Legend has it that if an unmarried woman sleeps with a slice of the groom's cake under her pillow she will dream of her future husband!
Ideal Bride Magazine loves the idea of the groom having his own cake, attention does tend to be on the bride on the wedding day, but the groom should not be overlooked - they deserve some recognition too.
