John O'Donoghue & Bethany Cole, 26 and 25 respectively, have been together for 8 years. They met at college at the end of their a-levels when they both moved to university; John to Loughborough University, Leicestershire to study Sport and Leisure Management for 3 years, followed by a PGCE in Secondary PE, and Beth to Rolle College, Exmouth to study Primary Teaching for 4 years. Both graduated as teachers in July 2008 and moved in together soon after. Beth teaches at Monkleigh Primary School, North Devon and John at Launceston College, Cornwall.
John proposed to Beth on Feb 21st 2011 on Duckpool Beach, Bude after writing 'Will you marry me?' in the sand, down on one knee with a white gold diamond ring, exactly what Beth had hoped for. He asked for Beth's dad's blessing at Christmas just a couple of months before.
John & Beth got married at Bickington United Reformed Church, Barnstaple, Beth's family church where she was christened and attended since a young age. The church is very special to all the family and Beth did not want to consider getting married anywhere else!
Planning for the wedding started soon after the proposal and a venue was booked by April 2011. In January 2012, it was found that the venue had a major leak in the roof which resulted in the whole roof being replaced and 10 extra bedrooms being built. Due to this, John & Beth decided there was no alternative but to find a new venue and with only 12 weeks until the wedding this was proving very difficult and stressful, especially as many venues were understandably already booked.
Beth tells us "Thankfully, Saunton Sands Hotel was able to accommodate us! Everything certainly happens for a reason as this has always been my dream wedding venue, it is very close to where I grew up, my parents, Rosie & Chris, got married there 31 years ago and I had been bridesmaid there as a child. It is a beautiful venue, a stunning hotel with wonderful views looking over the North Devon coast. We were so pleased!"
The theme was buttons; Beth has always loved buttons. Beth tells us "There were buttons on the invites, placenames, order of services, bouquets and buttonholes! Even the cake was covered in iced buttons in matching colours. My mum, Rosie, worked tirelessly making the favours for each of the 80 daytime guests, chocolate buttons. She had button shaped silicon moulds, but was unable to 'temper' the chocolate at home. She went to local Belgian Chocolatier, Carlos Melchior, of Melchior Chocolates, South Molton (suppliers of Fortnum & Mason) for help! He very kindly allowed Mum to use his facilities, teach her how to temper chocolate and make the chocolate button favours in five flavours; milk, dark, white, strawberry and lime. They looked fantastic! My colour scheme was my favourite colour, teal with bright pink Peony bouquets and buttonholes."
Beth wore a taffeta, diamond white fitted dress with chapel length train with diamante detail by Sophia Tolli. Beth wore very sparkly diamante, sling back peep toe shoes by Benjamin Adams. The older bridesmaids wore full-length turquoise dresses by Hilary Morgan, all from Always and Forever, Bideford. Beth says "The service was excellent and Andy and Denise were so wonderful! We were always excited about trips to the shop." The younger bridesmaids wore fairy bridesmaid dresses with a big bow on the back from John Lewis. The men wore Grey silk suits with tailcoats from Cameron Ross. All suits were hired from Always and Forever, Bideford.
The daytime guests sat down to a three-course meal. The chef at Saunton Sands did a wonderful job, and was very accommodating to the couples needs. The guests had a choice between prawn salad or ham hock ballotine for starter, pistachio crusted salmon or roast sirloin of beef for main and warm treacle tart or passion fruit delice for dessert.
The tables were decorated with fish bowls filled with floating bubbles and roses, provided by Saunton Sands, teal tea lights, favour boxes and table numbers - numbers in photo frames decorated with buttons (all made by Beth) Beth also made the large table plan to show guests where they were sitting.
The first dance was 'My girl' by The Temptations. Beth is a big fan of Motown music. It wasn't choreographed, however as a surprise, the hens performed a choreographed routine of 'Single Ladies' by Beyonce that was learnt on the Hen weekend at a spa and holiday cottage at Somerset Country Escape, in Taunton, Somerset.
"The thing we remember most about our wedding day is just how happy everyone was to be there! It was the most perfect day with all our family and friends that we love dearly. It was such a celebration! It was amazing to go down onto Saunton Beach with the photographer during early evening and have some stunning photos taken as the tide was coming in, on the beach and in the cave. Our photographer, Alan Schofield, was fantastic! He not only took photos, but also was like our own personal wedding day planner; helping with minor details and making sure the day ran smoothly. He made our day extra special!"
