Into That Dress: Arm Toning Exercises

This article is the first in a series on which we’ll target specific areas of your body in the run up to your big day. This month, it’s all about your arms and how to give them a sleek, toned appearance. Here are five exercises to for achieving amazing arms:

Press Up

I’ve yet to meet a bride-to-be that meets the idea of press ups with lots of enthusiasm. In my experience, women tend to find them more difficult than men due to the difference in upper body strength.

But the fact is, press ups are an excellent upper body toner, working the muscles in your chest, shoulders and the back of your arms. They are an effective weapon against those dreaded ‘bingo wings’.

If you do find press ups difficult, start by performing the exercise on your knees before moving onto the full press up pictured below, on which you balance on your toes as opposed to your knees.

Bentover Row

This is a great exercise for toning the muscles in your back, shoulders and biceps. To carry it out you’ll need a light set of dumbbells as shown in the picture below. To get into the start position, bend slightly at the knees and at the torso, sticking out your chest and looking ahead in order to keep your back straight.

Then with your arms straight out by your side and with a dumbbell in each hand, pull the weights straight up towards your chest.

Shoulder Press

The shoulder press is another great shoulder toner and is effective at removing bingo wings by targeting the triceps at the back of your arms. Holding a dumbbell in each arm, position them at 90 degree angles in line with your head as pictured below.

From there, simply lift them above your head until your arms are straight. But be sure not to lock out your elbows when the weights are above your head.

Table Top

The table top is a great all around toner that brings in your back, arms, hamstrings and bum. I’ve made sure to include it here because it really gets the back of your arms going.

Bicep Curls

Curls completely isolate the biceps at the front of your arms, serving to tone and give your arms a great appearance. Bicep curls are a great way to finish off a great workout. It’s important to just move your arms here; avoid swaying backwards and forwards or excessively moving your shoulders.
