A Personal Touch: Nicci & Rich

Nicci, 28 and Rich, 30 met through mutual friends 12 years ago in Nottingham where they both lived. Since meeting they have emigrated to Australia, where they have lived for 2 years and have both become teachers.

Nicci says of Rich’s proposal "We’d been discussing our work options and visa requirements to allow us to stay in Oz and I joked that it would probably be easier to get if we were married. Very calmly Rich said if I still fancied getting married then lets do it. So it all happened at home in Brisbane after a few drinks."

Both the Hen and Stag enjoyed 2 celebrations, Nicci spent the day at Ascot races in Brisbane, followed by dinner at a Thai restaurant and Karaoke. For her second celebration in Nottingham she met with friends for dinner and cocktails and danced the night away. Rich went paint balling followed by a pub crawl in Brisbane and met up with friends in Nottingham for drinks and a catch up.

Nicci tells us " We didn’t have a theme or colour scheme, we made our invitations and chose a paper each that represented us, we then cut the paper up to form individual invitations so each one was slightly different. I chose a paper with dress making patterns on and Rich chose one with a map and clock watch. We made our own button holes, from acrylic made on a laser cutter, they were etched with the date of the wedding and our names on, again each one was a different colour. We named the tables at the meal after Australian animals. "

The couple broke tradition and both spent the eve of the wedding at Nicci’s parents house, the next morning they arrived at Nottingham Council House in separate taxis, where they enjoyed an intimate ceremony with 19 members of immediate family in the Sheriffs Room.

The Brides Outfit

"I bought my dress from ebay, I sent my measurements off along with my colour choice for the fabric and 8 weeks later it was made and had travelled from China to Australia and fitted perfectly. No alterations needed and it cost less than £100. I bought my shoes in Australia from a shop called Wittners. They are so high, but so comfortable. They cost more than my dress, but I can wear them again and again! "

The Entertainment

"The food was beautiful, we had our meal and reception at Waltons Hotel in Nottingham. Our guests had a menu with two choices of starters, mains and dessert. I think this is a great idea as people could select what they wanted. The choices for the starter were Celeriac and fennel soup or smoked chicken and duck with salad and an orange hollandaise dressing. The choices for the main were roast lamb with all the trimmings or lemon sole with asparagus and beurre blanc sauce or for the vegetarians a vine tomato tart. The choices for the desserts were chocolate orange delice or caramelised lemon tart. Then in the evening we had cones of chips and bacon butties.

We made and decorated our own cupcakes for the wedding and had four different flavours. Chocolate orange, lemon and poppy seed, cherry & raspberry and finally pistachio, pineapple and lime – a bit of a tropical Queensland influence."

The First Dance

"We didn’t have a first dance, we wanted the whole day to be about our family and friends being with us. On our invitations we asked everyone to tell us four songs they wanted to hear at the reception."

"We had our wedding our way, we personalised a lot of the little details from the button holes and laser cut, magnetic name places, which our guest could stick on their fridge when they got home. With help from my mum and sister we arranged everything from Australia, not always easy with a 10 hour time difference.

The memorable parts of the day were how calm I felt. Everything ran smoothly. We didn’t have a set plan and after travelling for nearly 30 hours around the world, the silly little things we ignored. How wonderful it felt to have everyone we wanted there from around the world. How great the food was, the taste, the presentation and the excellent service we received. Dancing all night and not wanting it to end. We have great photographs to remember it all, Innocent Haze photographed our wedding and were great, they listened to what we wanted, were flexible and fun and gave us some great pictures. "

The Budget £5-6k
The Location Nottingham Council House in the Sheriffs Room
No. of guests 19 for the ceremony, further 160 joined throughout the evening
The Honeymoon We are thinking of either South Korea or Vietnam
